BOX SCORE
CHICAGO (AP) -- If it weren't for the expansion Columbus Blue
Jackets, the Chicago Blackhawks would be off to another dreadful
start.
| | Valeri Zelepunkin moves in on Kevyn Adams. | Tony Amonte scored a power-play goal to snap a tie with 8:25
left Sunday night and give the Blackhawks a 2-1 victory
over the Blue Jackets -- the only team they've beaten this season.
"You know in the first period, nothing's going to happen with a
team like that," said Amonte, who has scored three of his four
goals this season versus Columbus. "They just sit back and they
want you to get frustrated.
"So we just concentrated on playing good and waiting for the
opportunities."
Although he was tied up by Lyle Odelein, Amonte shoveled the
puck past Ron Tugnutt from the edge of the crease after Boris
Mironov's shot from the point bounded off the back boards. Steve
Sullivan scored the other Chicago goal.
David Vyborny scored on Columbus' first-ever penalty shot, but
that was the only offense the Blue Jackets could muster.
"It was lucky, but we needed the two points," said Vyborny,
who said he scored penalty-shot goals in the Czech Republic.
Chicago was 1-for-7 on the power play, while Columbus missed on
its two attempts. Tugnutt, who made 29 saves, said the disparity
was the difference.
"If we were playing five-on-five, we would have had a realistic
chance of winning the game," Tugnutt said. "Even if they only
scored one (power-play) goal, it's a momentum thing."
Chicago backup goalie Rob Tallas made the start and stopped 15
shots. Sullivan opened the scoring at 6:46 of the second period
when he circled behind the net and lifted a backhander over
Tugnutt's shoulder.
Vyborny tied it 30 seconds later, after he was awarded the
penalty shot when Chicago's Reto Von Arx covered a loose puck in
the crease. After deking, Vyborny beat Tallas with a high
backhander on the glove side.
Game notes The Blue Jackets were shorthanded eight times in Saturday's
loss at Colorado. Columbus coach Dave King suggested Amonte and
other Blackhawks were diving Sunday. "The three 'T's' of hockey
are technique, tactics and theatrics. We saw some strong theatrics
tonight." ... The Blackhawks announced that Judy Smith, wife of
general manager Mike Smith, died Sunday after battling cancer and
Parkinson's disease. She was 50.
