BOX SCORE
DETROIT (AP) -- There's something about playing in Joe Louis
Arena that brings out the best in Calgary's Cory Stillman.
| | Detroit's Chris Chelios crashes the boards -- and uses Steve Smith as a cushion. | "I enjoy coming here, that's for sure," Stillman said after he
scored two of Calgary's three power-play goals, including the
go-ahead tally late in the second period, as the Flames beat the
Detroit Red Wings 4-2 Sunday night.
Stillman has eight goals and 14 points in 18 career games
against the Red Wings. His only career hat trick came nearly three
years to the day in Detroit.
"It's fun coming here," Stillman said. "The big thing is when
you come to Joe Louis, you know you're in for a heck of a game."
Marc Savard had a goal and an assist and Jarome Iginla two
assists for the Flames, who won consecutive games on the road after
starting the season with three straight home losses.
"We said we have to start putting pressure on the puck, and
when you do, you get a few breaks and a few goals," said Flames
goalie Mike Vernon, who made 28 saves against his former team. "We
just carried it over from last night."
Calgary beat the New York Islanders 2-0 on Saturday.
Aaron Ward and Martin Lapointe scored for Detroit, which has
lost its first two home games in a 2-3 start. Chris Osgood had 33
saves for the Red Wings.
Detroit was whistled for 30 minutes' worth of penalties to
Calgary's eight. The Flames were 3-for-10 on the power play to the
Red Wings' 0-for-4.
"It's tough for me to judge; I couldn't be objective,"
Detroit's Sergei Fedorov said. "Two referees should get the job
done. We didn't have many breaks. I think we had a lot more
(penalties) than Calgary, and that was crucial. It takes a lot of
energy out when you're playing the penalty kill."
Stillman broke a 2-2 tie with 58.1 seconds left in the second
period when, with Detroit skating two men down, he converted a pass
from Savard for his second goal of the night.
Dave Lowry deflected a shot from Tommy Albelin past Osgood for
an insurance score with two minutes left in the third. That came
1:45 after Larry Murphy was sent off for slashing, which is being
called with a "zero tolerance level" by referees this season.
"Obviously there are going to be a lot more penalties called
for slashing," Stillman said. "We've cut ours down. We're getting
the hang of it."
Calgary converted its first power play when Osgood couldn't
clear the rebound of a close shot from Iginla, and Stillman tucked
in the loose puck 8:11 into the first period.
Each team scored twice during a penalty-marred second period.
Ward scored a fluke goal at 9:11 when his shot from the right
circle was stopped by Vernon, but rebounded in off defenseman Brad
Werenka.
Savard put Calgary back on top just 1:41 later when he beat
Osgood from the right circle. But Lapointe redirected a shot from
Brendan Shanahan past Vernon for a 2-2 tie at 12:25.
The Red Wings were called for five of the six penalties whistled
in the period, including a 10-minute misconduct against Chris
Chelios after Stillman's second goal. Chelios was already in the
box, giving Calgary the two-man advantage, when he was called for
delay of game after the Detroit net came loose during a scramble.
"We got a little frustrated, I think, after a few penalties and
it just kept getting worse and worse," said Detroit's Steve
Duchesne, who played his 1,000th career game. "Obviously the refs
didn't help us, but it happens. You get games like that.
"I got tripped behind the net in the third period and there's
no penalty. But we didn't play that good a game."
Game notes Vernon, who went to the Flames after he was the MVP of the
Red Wings' run to the 1997 Stanley Cup, is still a fan favorite in
Detroit. One fan held up a sign saying "I still miss you Vernie."
... Captain Steve Yzerman was scratched from the Red Wings lineup
with a recurrence of the right knee strain that sidelined him for
Detroit's first two games. ... Duchesne has played for 15 seasons
with six teams. ... Iginla has 18 points in 18 games against
Detroit.
