MIAMI (AP) -- Sheri Sam and Elena Baranova each scored 15 points
as the Miami Sol beat the Washington Mystics 52-44 Sunday.
Miami (17-11) moved within one game of the New York Liberty
(18-10) in the race for the second place in the Eastern Conference.
Washington (9-18) cut a 15-point deficit to two points, 44-42,
with 1:48 remaining.
Baranova hit a 3-pointer with 1:24 left and Debbie Black added a
short jumper as Miami pushed its lead to 49-42 with less than one
minute remaining.
Black shot 3-for-4 from the line in the final seconds to seal
the victory as Miami won for the 11th time in 13 games.
Chamique Holdsclaw led Washington with 18 points. Nikki McCray
added 13.
Sam hit a 3-pointer early in the second half to give Miami a
28-20 lead. With 12:02 left, a jumper by Sam gave the Sol their
biggest lead of the game, 38-23.
Washington countered with a 19-6 run to close within 44-42.
Miami, which trailed 8-0 early in the game, took a 19-18 lead on
a 3-pointer by Marla Brumfeld.
The Sol, who forced 12 turnovers in the first half, used a 9-1
surge to take a 23-18 halftime lead.
After hitting their first three shots, the Mystics were held
scoreless in the final 5:14 of the first half and shot just
6-for-24 in the period.
Miami's Sandy Brondello, who averages a team-best 13.6 points,
missed her third straight game with a strained right Achilles
tendon. |
