HOUSTON -- Spain captain Jordi Arrese was forced to substitute Davis Cup rookie Alberto Martin for the injured Alex Corretja for the doubles match against the United States. Martin paired up with Juan Balcells against the American team of Todd Martin and James Blake. The United States team won 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series. Corretja played nearly four hours on Friday in his stunning 4-6, 4-6, 7-6, 7-5, 6-4 upset of seven-time Wimbledon champion Pete Sampras. Spanish Tennis Federation president Agustin Pujol said that Corretja injured a tendon in his right hand when he leapt for a volley in the fifth set against Sampras. Corretja's status for his reverse singles match against Andy Roddick on Sunday is unclear. He will visit a doctor after the doubles match. Information from Reuters contributed to this report. |
