Guerin helps Oilers stay red-hot

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) -- Bill Guerin had two power-play goals and rookies Dan LaCouture and Brian Swanson each scored their first NHL goals in leading the Edmonton Oilers to a 6-1 victory Tuesday night over the Boston Bruins.

Tommy Salo
Edmonton Oilers goalie Tommy Salo fended off an array of sticks in a 6-1 victory over Boston.

Rem Murray and Todd Marchant also scored for the Oilers, who improved to 5-1-1. It is Edmonton's best start since the 1985-86 season when the Oilers began 5-1-0.

Brian Rolston scored for Boston, which has lost three in a row after starting the season 3-0-1. The Bruins have been outscored 16-3 in their last three games.

LaCouture scored at 7:40 of the first period when he drove down the left side and beat goalie Andrew Raycroft with a high shot.

Swanson scored early in the second after Boston defenseman Kyle McLaren misplayed an icing and lost the puck up to winger Daniel Cleary, who set up Swanson for a 4-0 lead.

Raycroft was replaced by Kay Whitmore after Swanson's goal, which came on Edmonton's 10th shot.

Rolston scored at 8:36 of the second period to make it 4-1, but Edmonton added two goals in the third period when Guerin and Murray scored nine seconds apart.

The lopsided score produced a number of skirmishes late in the game.

Edmonton opened the scoring 5:50 in when captain Doug Weight knocked down a bouncing puck and shoveled a backhand pass to Guerin in front of the Boston net. The goal was Guerin's fifth of the season.

Marchant made it 3-0 with a short-handed goal at 3:54 of the second.

Edmonton goalie Tommy Salo stopped 22 shots.

Weight did not play the third period.
