There's a lot of change in Kansas City, where Dick Vermeil has taken over
the reins at age 63 and fresh off his rest following his Super Bowl run with
the Rams. With him, Vermeil has brought in an entirely new coaching staff as
well as a number of new players such as quarterback Trent Green, the team's
most crucial acquisition.

Man in the spotlight
This can be a 10-fold spotlight with the litany of
changes. You can certainly make an argument for Vermeil being in the
spotlight. Does he still have the energy and drive to do this? We believe he
does. But perhaps the most important player to the Chiefs' success is Green,
who remains an unproven project of sorts considering that he's been sitting
behind Kurt Warner in St. Louis.
 Key position battle
Both starting cornerback spots are up for grabs. Ray
Crockett has been brought in from Denver and should win one spot, though
William Bartee, Pat Dennis and Eric Warfield are also in the mix.

Biggest adjustment
You can make a good case for Vermeil having the biggest
adjustment this season after having taken 2000 off in so-called
"retirement." Vermeil must again acclimate himself with the daily rigors,
long hours and imminent frustrations that come with the job.
Rookie report
The Chiefs gave up their first- and second-round picks in an
effort to land Green and Vermeil. Their
first pick was Syracuse defensive tackle Eric Downing in the third round.
They, too, took a flier on troubled Florida State receiver Marvin Minnis, who
was suspended for the Seminoles' national championship bowl game.
