King for a day in Tampa

Forced into the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' lineup two weeks ago against the Seahawks because of an injury to Trent Dilfer, Shaun King has helped lead the Bucs to two straight victories over quality opponents. And although the rookie from Tulane hasn't been spectacular, he has done everything the Bucs could have hoped for.

Bucs rookie Shaun King will face the Redskins in his first NFL playoff game.
At Seattle, King played virtually the entire second half of the Bucs' 16-3 victory over the Seahawks. He completed just three passes, but one of them, in the fourth quarter, went for his first career touchdown. Said King: "I wasn't scared. I wasn't nervous. I was excited."

On Monday night, with a national television audience, King started his first game in the NFL and responded by leading the Bucs past the Vikings in a crucial NFC Central matchup. The home-grown kid (King grew up in St. Petersburg, Fla.) threw two second-half touchdowns to rally the Bucs from a 14-10 halftime deficit to a 24-17 victory.

The win, the Bucs' fifth straight, improved Tampa Bay to 8-4 and kept the team in a tie with the Detroit Lions for first in the NFC Central. "This was our biggest game in a long time, and it was great to get a win," King said.

Here's a look at how some of the league's most intriguing rookies fared in Week 13. Each Tuesday during the regular season, ESPN.com offers its report cards for the Class of '99.

PLAYER, STATS THE SKINNY
Shaun King, QB,
Buccaneers

vs. Vikings
11-for-19, 93 yds.
2 TDs, 1 INT
4 att., 8 yds.

King, starting his first game in the NFL on Monday night against the Vikings, led the Bucs to victory and a tie for first in the NFC Central. He completed 11 of 19 passes for 93 yards and two touchdowns. The win was especially sweet for King because it came in front of a hometown crowd. King, who grew up in St. Petersburg, just 25 minutes from Raymod James Stadium, said his debut went well, adding, "This was for the fans and all the people in Tampa."
Joe Montgomery, RB,
Giants

vs. Jets
38 att., 111 yds., 1 TD

The second-round pick from Ohio State became the first Giants back to rush for more than 100 yards this season. It was his first NFL start and only the second game in which he has played. In Week 7, Montgomery carried the ball 14 times for 28 yards and his first NFL touchdown, but suffered a broken bone in his left foot and had been out since. His return provided the Giants with the running attack they have been lacking since Gary Brown was lost for the season to injury.
De'Mond Parker, RB,
Packers

at Bears
19 att., 113 yds., 2 TDs
2 rec., 6 yds.

Parker, in the lineup because of an injury to Dorsey Levens, responded with 113 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries. Both touchdowns came in the fourth quarter, sealing the Packers' victory. Coming into the game, the fifth-round pick had carried the ball just 11 times for 71 yards.
Edgerrin James, RB,
Colts

at Dolphins
23 att., 130 yds., 2 TDs
3 rec., 1 yd.

The young Colt had 130 yards rushing and two touchdowns Sunday as the Colts beat the Dolphins in Miami. James, who grew up in nearby Immokalee, Fla., and had 75 friends and family at the game, had rushed for more than 100 yards -- and scored both touchdowns -- by the end of the first half. "This was a very enjoyable homecoming," James told the Indianapolis Star & News. His eighth 100-yard game of the season tied Eric Dickerson's club record, set in 1988, and is one shy of the NFL rookie record held by four players.
David Boston, WR,
Cardinals

vs. Eagles
3 rec., 28 yds., 1 TD

Boston saved his best for when it really counted in Sunday's victory over the Eagles. With the Cardinals trailing 17-7 with less than five minutes to play, Boston made a tremendous leaping catch in the corner of the end zone to cut the Eagles' lead to three points. "I jumped 39 inches (vertical jump) at the combine," Boston told The Arizona Republic. "I saw I had a chance to make a play and did it." It was only the second touchdown of the season for Boston.
Donovan McNabb, QB,
Eagles

at Cardinals
19-for-31, 157 yds.
2 TDs, 1 INT
9 att., 67 yds.

The No. 2 overall draft pick outplayed Jake Plummer for the first three quarters of Sunday's game. However, in the end, Plummer gave the rookie a little lesson in how to finish an NFL game. McNabb completed 19 of 31 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns as the Eagles built a 17-7 lead. But it wasn't enough. Plummer threw two fourth-quarter touchdowns, leading the Cardinals to a 21-17 victory. "The positive thing was we were moving the ball, had some good drives, but we've got to seal the deal," McNabb said. The two touchdowns gave McNabb five on the year to go with four interceptions.
Jevon Kearse, DE,
Titans

at Ravens
3 tackles
1 sack

With one sack on Sunday, Kearse has at least half a sack in six straight games. For the season, the defensive end from Florida has 9½ sacks, the most among rookies, and good enough for a tie for sixth in the NFL.
J.J. Johnson, RB,
Dolphins

vs. Colts
21 att., 62 yds.
3 rec., 26 yds.

Johnson had a costly fumble in Sunday's loss to the Colts. The rookie from Mississippi State coughed the ball up with 19 seconds left in the first quarter, and Colts safety Chad Cota picked up the ball and ran it 25 yards for a touchdown, which gave the Colts a 17-3 lead. Johnson finished the game with 62 yards on 21 carries, lifting his season totals to 475 yards on 146 carries.
Kevin Johnson, WR,
Browns

at Chargers
5 rec., 41 yds., 1 TD

The Tim Couch-to-Kevin Johnson connection hooked up again on Sunday. Couch hit Johnson for a 19-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter (and Johnson's eighth touchdown of the season). He leads all rookies in receptions with 53 for 768 yards.
Olandis Gary, RB,
Broncos

vs. Chiefs
14 att., 61 yds., 1 TD
2 rec., 15 yds.

Gary scored the Broncos' only touchdown of the game in Sunday's loss to the Chiefs. In what has been an extremely disappointing season in Denver, however, Gary has been one of the few bright spots. The fourth-round pick has emerged as a solid NFL running back. When Terrell Davis returns next season, Gary will give the Broncos considerable depth in the backfield.
Kevin Faulk, RB,
Patriots

vs. Cowboys
9 att., 36 yds.
3 rec., 43 yds.

Faulk continues to show that if he's healthy and gets playing time, he can be an effective running back. On Sunday, the rookie from LSU had 36 yards on nine carries and caught three passes for 43 yards. Faulk had a big third-down reception on the Patriots' winning drive.
Tim Couch, QB,
Browns

at Chargers
18-for-29, 184 yds.
1 TD, 2 INTs

Couch threw his eighth touchdown pass of the year to Kevin Johnson, but the Browns couldn't muster enough offense to beat the Chargers. The rookie signal caller has thrown 13 touchdowns on the season, as well as 11 interceptions.
Andy Katzenmoyer, LB,
Patriots

vs. Cowboys
1 tackle

The return of Ted Johnson to the Patriots' lineup will cut into Katzenmoyer's playing time for the rest of the season. Katzenmoyer, who was moved to middle linebacker during training camp because of Johnson's injury, played on Sunday despite Johnson's return. "The Big Kat" will continue to get considerable playing time while Johnson works his way back into game shape.
