McDaniel takes Sehorn's spot in secondary

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New York Giants cornerback Jason Sehorn probably will miss one or two games after breaking a rib while making an interception on the opening play from scrimmage against Dallas.

The Giants, who beat the Cowboys 19-14 Sunday, have a bye this week, and don't play again until Oct. 29 against Philadelphia.

"He will probably be doubtful for Philly and questionable for Cleveland then we'll probably have him back for the Rams," Giants coach Jim Fassel said Monday. "That's my best guess."

Fassel named nickel back Emmanuel McDaniel to start in Sehorn's spot at right corner. Reggie Stephens will take over the nickel back position.

Sehorn broke a rib below his right collarbone after landing on his back while making the first of the Giants' five interceptions against Troy Aikman.

"It's got to heal to a certain extent," Fassel said. "Then you can pad those things. Obviously, it will take time. It will take a couple of weeks for him to feel better. Those are painful like any other fracture of a bone."

Fassel said Sehorn would be able to do some work with the team during practice, but he would have to avoid contact for a couple of weeks.

Sehorn, who is engaged to "Law & Order" star Angie Harmon, has been plagued by injuries the last two seasons. He missed the entire 1998 season after hurting his knee returning a kickoff in a preseason game. He played in only 10 games last season. He was sidelined early with a hamstring injury and then for the season on Dec. 5 after breaking his leg.

Both of Sehorn's major injuries came in games against the New York Jets.

"I landed on my shoulder and it folded over," Sehorn said. "At first, I thought it was my collarbone but it turns out I fractured the rib underneath the collarbone. That's a silver lining. It's a bigger bone."

Sehorn leads the Giants this season with 43 tackles and seemed to be getting back to the form that made him one of the NFL's top cornerbacks.

"Things don't always go the way you want them to," Sehorn said of his latest injury. "You have to roll with the punches. What can I change by being ticked off or upset? The only thing I can do is deal with it. Over the last two years, I've learned to deal with these situations."
