ALAMEDA, Calif. -- His coach calls him "very questionable" to play this coming weekend, but Oakland Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon vows a broken bone in his left wrist won't stop him from playing against the Miami Dolphins.
Gannon, a right-hander, was injured while being knocked to the ground after throwing the deciding touchdown pass in the Raiders' 24-23 win Sunday over the New York Jets. The 5-yard pass to James Jett came with 26 seconds remaining, as Gannon rallied the Raiders from a 17-point deficit late in the third quarter. Gannon was 26-for-51 for a career-high 352 yards against the Jets and led the Raiders with 60 yards rushing. Oakland coach Jon Gruden was not confident about Gannon being able to play against Miami, especially since the Raiders have a bye the following week. "We are concerned. Right now he is very questionable for the next game. We'll see if there's a soft cast he can wear," Gruden said. "I know the snap itself is not going to be easy procedurally. He's going to be sore for a while." If Gannon cannot play, Gruden said Bobby Hoying will be the Raiders' starter at home against the Dolphins. Hoying, obtained in a trade from Philadelphia during the preseason, has not played a regular-season game for Oakland but made six starts for the Eagles in 1997 while Gruden was the offensive coordinator there. Tailback Tyrone Wheatley, who was taken off the field on a cart after injuring his lower back in the third quarter of the win over the Jets, remained in a hospital Monday for further tests. Gruden said tests so far have shown no serious damage to Wheatley's back.
Gruden said it is unclear whether Wheatley, the Raiders' leading
runner this season, will be available for the game against Miami. | ALSO SEE Gannon shoots down Jets as Raiders rally from 17-point deficit
