CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia (Ticker) -- Schuye LaRue scored 10 of her 13 points in the second half and Chelsea Whitaker had nine of her 11 after the break, lifting 17th-ranked Virginia to a 78-67 victory over No. 25 Old Dominion. Svetlana Volnaya led the Cavaliers (5-3) with 15 points and Chalois Lias added 12 and blocked three shots. Maiga Hamchetou finished with 19 points and nine rebounds, Okeisha Howard scored 17 and Sharron Francis had 13 for the Monarchs (1-3), who shot just 38 percent (13-of-34) in the second half and gave up 24 points off 23 turnovers. Volnaya, a 6-2 forward from Belarus, hit all five of her shots from the field, including two 3-pointers. The Cavaliers trailed by as much as 10 points in the first half, the last time at 24-14 when Howard hit a layup with 12:06 left. After a 16-footer by Tiffany Thompson gave the Monarchs a 26-18 lead with seven minutes to go in the half, the Cavaliers went on a 12-0 run to take their first lead. Marcie Dickson's running jumper after a steal by Whitaker made it 30-26. Virginia led 37-33 at the half and only trailed twice in the second half. The Monarchs still were within 70-67 on a 3-pointer by Howard with three minutes left but they did not score again. The Cavaliers closed out their third win in four games with an 8-0 run. Lias hit a pair of free throws, Volnaya nailed a 3-pointer and then connected on 1-of-2 free throws before Lias went 2-for-2 at the line.
