 BERKELEY, California (Ticker) -- Marcus Fields ran for 123 yards and a touchdown and Deltha O'Neal returned an interception for a score to lead California to a 21-7 victory over Rutgers. Fields carried 11 times and none was bigger than his first. On the first play from scrimmage, he went 49 yards for a 7-0 lead 22 seconds into the contest. O'Neal picked off a pass from Mike McMahon and returned it 75 yards to give the Golden Bears a 14-7 lead with 4:15 left in the second quarter. Kyle Boller completed 8-of-15 passes for 89 yards and a TD for California (1-0), which has won three straight season openers. McMahon was 15-of-29 for 183 yards and a TD for Rutgers, which was playing in California for the first time. Rutgers coach Terry Shea previously coached San Jose State. Rutgers tied the game, 7-7, when McMahon tossed a 16-yard pass to tight end L.J. Smith with 6:30 left in the first quarter. Just over three minutes into the second half, Boller threw a 17-yard pass to Michael Ainsworth to make it 21-7.
