James talking to agents, not recruiters

By Andy Katz
ESPN.com

The early-signing period for high school seniors to sign national letters of intent with colleges passed without LeBron James inking his name anywhere -- and that includes with an agent, Nike or adidas.

But that doesn't mean the country's top-rated prep player isn't getting his share of interested visitors. While the James family isn't welcoming college coaches for home visits, it is hosting prospective agents, and three have made official proposals to the family in Akron.

LeBron's mother, Gloria, told ESPN.com earlier this week that her son hasn't signed any agreements with an agent, and the family is still open and listening to anyone who wants to make the formal presentation. Just another sign that LeBron James will be made available to NBA teams in June and most likely become the overall No. 1 pick in the draft.

"If you've got to ask us (what we want), then we're not dealing with you," Gloria James said. "LeBron sells himself. LeBron is going to be in position to get himself endorsements.

"We're looking for an agent that has the track record, the background that gets their clients the bigger deals and the bigger money. We want it to be someone who we're comfortable with."

Gloria James said LeBron could get his own shoe deal, without the aid of an agent. And she said there is no timetable. All they need to do is hire an agent before draft day in June. Gloria said she's looking for a straight shooter, someone who isn't coming at them with promises, but rather with proof they can deliver LeBron to the promised land of endorsements.

"We're not going to rush into things," Gloria James said.

While all signs point toward James entering the 2003 draft out of high school, putting his signature on a NLI last week wouldn't have signaled otherwise. Kwame Brown, the overall No. 1 pick in 2001, signed with Florida before entering the draft out of high school. Eddy Curry also signed with DePaul as a senior, only to enter the 2000 draft straight from high school.

And, as for LeBron possibly sitting out his senior season at St. Vincent-St. Mary High to avoid a possible injury? Gloria James admitted she's worried, but also said she'd never suggest shutting James down until the draft.

"He's worked too hard and too long and he loves this game," Gloria James said. "It has nothing to do with the NBA. I would never tell him not to play."
