Bulls no match for Malone's Jazz

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME FLOW

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Karl Malone flirted with the fourth triple-double of his career, but with a win over the Chicago Bulls well in hand he was a spectator in the fourth quarter.

Malone finished with 26 points, nine rebounds and eight assists through three quarters of Utah's 109-64 win over Chicago.

He snapped out of a three-game slump and shot 10-of-13 from the field.

Jazz backup point guard Jacque Vaughn nearly had a triple-double of his own, putting up a career-high 15 points, to go along with eight rebounds and seven assists.

Reserve center Greg Ostertag scored a season-high 11 points and had seven rebound and eight blocked shots.

"I don't want to take anything away from them, because they're a young team," Ostertag said. "I think their youth is working against them right now, but they're going to be good. They have a lot of talent there."

Chicago, who dropped to 1-8 on the year, is in the middle of a six-game road trip and it showed. The Bulls shot just 27 percent for the game.

"It was a dominating performance on their part, both offensively and defensively," said Chicago coach Tim Floyd. "They did a great job of taking away our interior and one of the primary difference was their points in the paint."

Utah held a 54-22 edge on scoring in the paint, and outrebounded the Bulls 63-38.

Utah put the game out of reach with 15-8 run to start the quarter that was keyed by Malone's 13-point third quarter.

The Bulls were led by Elton Brand's 23 points, but Brand made just 5-of-16 shots from the field. The Bulls' 64 points is the fewest the Jazz have allowed in franchise history.

Game notes
Jazz guard John Starks missed Saturday's game to be with his mother, who is ill. The Jazz aren't sure if Starks will be back for Monday's game against Dallas. ... Coach Jerry Sloan opted to give first-round draft pick DeShawn Stevenson his first start of the season. He scored two points and had two assists in 22 minutes. ... This was an extreme case of youth against experience. The Jazz are second oldest team in the NBA (behind Portland) with an average age of 30.3 years. Chicago is the youngest. The Bulls' average age is just 23.4. ... Utah's margin of victory was the second-largest in franchise history. The Jazz beat the Milwaukee Bucks 144-96 in 1990.
