FORT MYERS, Fla. -- David Chadd was named director of amateur scouting for the Boston Red Sox on Saturday, continuing a shakeup that could involve manager Joe Kerrigan.
There was no word on whether Kerrigan would be retained amid speculation he could be replaced. General manager Dan Duquette, who hired Kerrigan as manager last August, was fired Thursday.
On Friday, team president Larry Lucchino declined to discuss the managerial situation.
Chadd was director of scouting for the Florida Marlins and was let go when former Montreal Expos owner Jeffrey Loria bought the team. Former Marlins owner John Henry completed his purchase of the Red Sox last Wednesday.
The Red Sox also announced the appointment of Dr. Charles Steinberg, 43, as executive vice president for public affairs, a new position. He held a similar job with the San Diego Padres, where he worked the past seven years.
Chadd, 36, replaces Wayne Britton, who will be paid for the last two years of his contract. The Red Sox are expected to name directors for Latin American and pro scouting.
Chadd said the Red Sox have a solid scouting department but "they might have been a little understaffed."
So they added five scouts from the Marlins organization -- Curtis Dishman, Murray Cook, Jim Woodward, Dave Finley and Grant Britton, who is not related to Wayne Britton.
Chadd wouldn't comment on the recent lack of productivity of Boston's farm system.
"I'm more concerned about going forward," he said. "I'm a positive person. I want to keep it that way."
Asked what his scouting philosophy is, he said, "try to find a couple more Nomar Garciaparras."
Chadd, a native of Wichita, Kan., started with the Marlins as a Midwest area scout in 1995.
Britton joined the Red Sox as an area scout in 1979, became scouting director in 1992 and vice president of scouting in 1998. |
